Our civil rights legal team at Cooper, Barton & Cooper is advocating on behalf of a woman who was the victim of a gross miscarriage of justice by the Cobb County and its Sheriff’s Office. Ms. Sierra Castle was arrested and sent to jail after she failed to pay a $15 seatbelt violation. The shocking details of this case don’t end here--she was further mistreated and jailed as a man. We proudly represent Ms. Castle and intend to fight not only for her but for all members of the LGBT community who are victims of unadulterated discrimination and maltreatment. We want to ensure any similar incidents never happen again.
Ms. Castle forgot to pay a $15 seatbelt fine and years later, after she called law enforcement to report an incident, she was immediately arrested once the officer saw a warrant for failing to pay the fine and appear in court. Not only was she subjected to bias and ridicule at the hands of Cobb County jail corrections officers, but Ms. Castle was denied her required daily medication. Officers patted her down and repeatedly called her mister or sir while keeping her in a holding cell intended for males.
Ms. Castle alleges Cobb County and its Sheriff’s Office violated her constitutional rights under both state and federal law. She hopes to right the wrong that was done to her and to ensure that Cobb County creates and enforces its existing policies to ensure that this type of incident does not occur in the future. The ongoing case is now pending in federal court. You can read more here on the Atlanta Journal Consitution.
